Strange Science (Bally, 1986)
Released by Bally in 1986, Strange Science is a fast and colorful pinball machine that leans into the wild world of mad scientists and eccentric experiments. Designed by Dan Langlois, the game captures the playful, chaotic spirit of the 1980s with a blend of rapid gameplay, bright artwork, and a unique light show that made it stand out on arcade floors.
The playfield features a traditional two-flipper setup complemented by a smaller third one, three pop bumpers, a kick-out hole, and a distinctive vertical up-loop that propels the ball in a vertical plane—a unique feature for its time. Players can engage in a 2 to 5-ball multiball mode, initiated through the "atom smasher" mechanism, which utilizes an impulse-exchange system to release balls into play. Additionally, the game includes a player-controlled kickback in the left outlane, providing an extra layer of strategy and control. The most visually striking element is the neon display topper mounted on the backbox, which illuminates during specific gameplay moments, enhancing the game's electrifying theme.
The art package by Greg Freres complements the offbeat theme perfectly, depicting wild inventions, zany laboratory creatures, and frantic scientists in a cartoonish, energetic style. The bright colors and exaggerated characters give Strange Science a lively personality that fits the game's rapid gameplay. Synthesized music and quirky sound effects round out the atmosphere, immersing players in a chaotic laboratory setting.
With a production run of around 2,350 units, Strange Science had a modest presence compared to Bally’s bigger titles but built a loyal following. Its fast gameplay, distinctive neon topper, and chaotic theme made it a memorable experience for players seeking something different from more conventional pinball offerings.
Today, Strange Science is appreciated as a cult classic. Its unusual layout, bright aesthetic, and kinetic energy make it a standout from Bally’s adventurous mid-1980s lineup, continuing to capture attention in collections and arcades.
